Wooden sculptures made with a saw.
The year-round nativity scene, standing between the historic Camaldolese church and the UKSW campus in Warsaw's Bielany district, holds a fascinating story. Its creator is Józef Wilkoń – an outstanding artist of many talents: sculptor, painter, set designer, and illustrator. He created the nativity scene over 18 months, working only with a saw – no chisel, no hammer. He then gifted it to the „Akogo?” foundation, run by Ewa Błaszczyk, who decided that the place for this unique work was Lasek Bielański. The installation arrived there in 2004.
The nativity scene's form refers to traditional folk art from Podhale – raw, highly expressive, imbued with emotion and simplicity. The monumental structure measures six meters in height and consists of several dozen wooden figures with a total weight of about four tons. Wilkoń himself often recalls Christmas traditions from his childhood when discussing it, which became his inspiration for creating this extraordinary nativity scene.
